Your Tax Season’s Over. Now What?
Authored by: Kelsey Blum – Partner Marketing Manager
There’s a certain stillness that hits an accounting firm the week after tax season.
Phones slow down. Email traffic dips. The office (or Zoom grid) is noticeably less chaotic. I’ve talked to enough firm owners to know what that silence can feel like—it’s relief, sure, but it’s also…uncertainty. Almost like standing in the doorway of a room you’ve never entered, wondering what to do next.
As someone who lives and breathes marketing for accountants and firm owners, let me tell you something I wish more people heard:
This “off-season” you’re stepping into? It’s not a break. It’s a runway.
And the firms who understand that? They’re the ones who take off while everyone else is just catching their breath.
I’ve Seen It Too Many Times…
We work with a lot of firms at Brand House. From solo CPAs to regional firms with 200+ staff. And here’s the pattern I’ve seen repeatedly:
- March and April? It’s survival mode. Everything’s reactive. Everyone’s running on caffeine and grit.
- May hits, and suddenly there’s space—so people unplug. Pause. Disappear.
- By the time they plug back in, it’s August. They’ve lost the momentum, the insights, and the attention of their audience.
And I get it. You deserve rest. But rest doesn’t mean losing steam.
This Is When the Smart Firms Make Their Moves
Right now is your window to do things you can’t do when you’re buried in 60-hour weeks.
For example:
You finally have time to look back.
Ask your team: What clients made us better? Which ones drained us? Where did we drop balls, and where did we crush it? The answers should shape your services, your pricing, your ideal client profile—everything.
You can get back in front of your clients before they forget you exist.
They only hear from most accountants once a year. But your firm can be different. Send a short check-in. Share an article that might help their business. Offer a quarterly strategy call. Show them you’re still here, still invested.
You can level up your brand while everyone else is silent.
This is the part I get really excited about. Update that tired website. Build a client onboarding process that doesn’t rely on 47 back-and-forth emails. Start creating the kind of content that positions you as the authority, not just the person who files returns.
This isn’t fluff. This is how firms go from “just another CPA” to a recognized name in their niche.
Real Talk: Marketing Isn’t Just Ads and Hashtags
It’s alignment. It’s clarity. It’s making sure your best clients know you’re the best choice for them, and that your team feels proud to be part of what you’re building.
Marketing in May doesn’t mean blasting out promos. It means being intentional about your growth.
- If you only want to work with construction clients, let’s build a brand that speaks their
- If you’re shifting into advisory, let’s design an experience that educates clients and elevates your value.
- If your firm’s culture has changed, let’s make sure your digital presence actually shows that.
So, What Should You Actually Do Right Now?
Here’s what I tell our clients at Brand House:
- Debrief your season. What worked, what didn’t, what’s changing.
- Audit your brand. Does it reflect who you are now? Who you want to attract?
- Reconnect with your clients. Don’t wait ‘til next March.
- Rebuild your systems. Onboarding, scheduling, communication, everything.
- Map your marketing. June through December is your season to shine.
You’re Not Behind. You’re Early—If You Act Now.
Listen, I know this part of the year can feel…weird. Like you’re floating in between seasons, trying to figure out whether to rest, catch up, or build.
But I’ll leave you with this: The firms that are growing-the ones getting acquired, attracting top-tier clients, landing in industry publications, they aren’t doing that during tax season.
They’re doing it right now.
And you can too.
So, if your gut is telling you, “We’re meant for more than just compliance work and chaos every April,” then good news:
Now is exactly the time to do something about it.
Need help figuring out where to start? That’s what we do. Let’s talk through your goals and map out what your next chapter could look like.
Because the off-season? It’s only the beginning.
